To fiction editors everywhere...

If your magazine does not respond to rejected manuscripts, please make a note of it in your guidelines.  In addition, if you include an estimated response time in your guidelines, make sure that it is realistic and accurate.  I realize that it can take time to read through various submissions, but a total lack of response will do nothing other than alienate a new writer, and discourage them from submitting to your magazine again.  A writer's time is valuable, and having to sit on a piece that may not even be accepted is the worst way to waste it.  Sending a simple 'no thanks' e-mail should take no more than thirty seconds, and is really the minimal effort you can put in, considering the amount of time a writer may take to craft any given story.
